Government

On 3 June 2025 the members of government belonging to the Freedom Party (Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) tendered their resignations to His Majesty the King. On 22 August 2025 the members of government belonging to New Social Contract (Nieuw Sociaal Contract, NSC) tendered their resignations to His Majesty the King. Prime Minister Dick Schoof and the remaining ministers and state secretaries, who also tendered their resignations, will, at the King’s request, continue carrying out their duties in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed.

Caretaker government

A caretaker government continues to govern but deals only with ongoing business. Members of government maintain the same powers and are still allowed to make decisions and take measures. However, new policy and policy changes are proposed only when necessary. Letters to parliament are sent, parliamentary questions are asked, debates are held and motions are submitted.

Controversial issues

The Senate and the House of Representatives can declare certain issues controversial. Such issues are then no longer discussed by the House. The House will determine in the near future which issues this applies to.

New elections

In the meantime, preparations are under way for new parliamentary elections, which will be held on 29 October 2025. The process of forming a new government will begin after the elections have been held. Only once a new government has been formed will the transfer of power from the current government take place.
